What One Congregation Can Do

by Ann Finch, EGR Diocesan Coordinator

St. James Episcopal Church in Potomac, MD has put the MDGs front and center of their mission life. Ann Finch shares details.

July 1 was our MDG Sunday at St. James. Attendance at all three services totalled about 180, including children. On the 40 commitment forms received, members of our congregation report:

. 18 folks committed to 0.7% giving, 13 more intend to move toward 0.7% giving
. 4 have joined
ONE Episcopalian
. 6 have joined the ONE Campaign
. 29 have committed themselves to prayer in support of the MDGs
. 12 are volunteering time to MDG-related organizations
. 22 are committed to telling others

Those who entered dollar amounts reported donations totalling $23,929/year going to more than two dozen organizations. Funds collected at our MDG services on July 1 totalled $1,330 for Episcopal Relief and Development (including undesignated donations and cash); $840 for GAVI Alliance; $100 for CARE; and $50 for Heifer International.

Previously, St. James took the unique approach of studying the MDGs through the lens of one country - Namibia - where they already support and orphanage.
