What One Can Do...

Giving through Episcopal &

Anglican Communion Partners

When you give to support the MDGs through Episcopal Church and Anglican Communion partners, you not only avoid the expensive overhead and middlemen of many nonprofits and NGOs, you strengthen relationships within the global Church ... and that brings us even closer to God's dream of global reconciliation.

Remember, giving is an opportunity for education and prayerful discernment, an opportunity to ask where God is drawing you more deeply into relationship. It's an important spiritual discipline as we let go of the wealth that so often has us firmly in its grasp. But giving done badly can do more harm than good. It can create toxic dependencies and, in direct contrast to our baptismal covenant, strip people of their basic human dignity. In their book, What Can One Person Do? Sabina Alkire and Edumund Newell offered these guidelines for smart giving.  St. Bart's in New York City has come up with some giving guidelines you might find helpful. Also, read this piece on the Church's unique role in achieving the MDGs, which talks about the relationships of mutuality and interdependence our giving should reinforce.

Here are just a few Episcopal/Anglican organizations that are working toward the MDGs. If you'd like to submit another one, email us with as much information as you have on who they are, whom they serve and how much of the money actually gets to the people who need it.

Episcopalians for Global Reconciliation

EGR doesn't build clinics or provide bednets or dig wells -- we connect people, congregations, dioceses, organizations and anyone else across the Church so they can do those things better. EGR is the connective tissue for this movement of global reconciliation. We make the handshakes happen so nobody does this ministry in isolation, and so that everyone can benefit from the gifts of all. Consider making part of your MDG gift to sustain this movement. Because every dollar given to EGR means more people involved, more people praying, more people giving, more people lobbying ... more people realizing God's dream is about them.

Episcopal Relief and Development

ERD is the official relief and development organization of the Episcopal Church, providing emergency assistance in times of disaster; rebuilding devastated communities and offering long-term program development solutions to fight poverty.   ERD works through Anglican Communion partners in nearly 40 countries and because of those partnerships 92 cents of every dollar given to ERD gets to the people on the ground who need it most -- an astoundingly high percentage in the development world.  You can support the work of ERD by a direct donation to one of its many relief and development funds, by buying a gift from its Gifts for Life catalog or by selling Bishop's Blend coffee at your church (or anywhere else!). Want to learn more about ERD and spread the word about their work in your congregation? Go to the ERD Resource Center for newsletters, bulletin inserts and more. For more information contact your ERD diocesan representative. They'll be happy to work with you.
